A studio that works in publishing, not around it

BookZen designs and illustrates books. That narrow focus is deliberate: the constraints of print, the conventions readers expect and the specifications printers demand are things you learn by doing them repeatedly.

Designers and illustrators, based in Chennai

The studio is in Chennai and most of our commissions come from outside India: trade and self-published authors in the United States and Australia, publishers and educational groups across India, corporate and publishing clients in the UAE and Saudi Arabia, and agencies in South Africa and the Czech Republic.

We do covers, interiors, illustration and production artwork. We do not do brand strategy, websites or marketing campaigns, and when a client needs those we say so rather than stretching to cover them.

How we think about a book

Read first

Concepts come from the manuscript, the genre and the audience. A designer who has not read the book is guessing, and it shows on the cover.

Decide early, cheaply

Roughs and sketches exist so that expensive mistakes stay cheap. Approving a direction on paper costs a fraction of changing it after final artwork.

Design for the press

Stock, spine width, colour space and finish are decided at the start, not discovered when the printer rejects the file.

What the studio covers

Cover and jacket design

Fiction, non-fiction, children's and academic covers, including series systems and print finish specification.

Illustration

Character-led book illustration, editorial artwork, technical and medical plates, and hand-drawn work in traditional media.

Interior and production

Typesetting, front matter, image placement and press-ready output built to a printer's template.

Vector and technical artwork

Hand redrawing, exploded views, patent figures and CAD colourisation for manufacturers and documentation teams.

Outsourced capacity

Committed monthly volume for publishers and agencies, with named contacts and agreed rate cards.

Bilingual typesetting

Tamil and English titles set with equal care, including bilingual covers and educational material.

Working across time zones

Every project has one named contact and an agreed daily overlap window. Files, feedback and version history live in a shared folder, so progress never depends on catching someone live.

Manuscripts stay under NDA from the first email, and contracts, invoicing and handover are handled in English.

Fair questions about a studio you have not met

A core team of designers and illustrators in Chennai, with additional illustrators brought onto larger projects. Exact numbers change with the workload; capacity for your project is confirmed in writing before you commit.

Rather than quote a number we cannot evidence on this page, we would rather show you work and let you speak to references. Ask and we will arrange both.

You get told early. Schedules slip occasionally for real reasons, and the useful response is a phone call while there is still time to adjust, not a silence followed by a missed date.

Tell us what you are making and when it has to be finished. We will tell you honestly whether we are the right studio for it.
