A studio built around how books are actually made

BookZen is a book design and illustration studio in Chennai working with authors, publishing houses, educational publishers and creative agencies across several continents. We handle the visual side of a book — the cover that has to compete as a thumbnail, the interior that has to stay readable for three hundred pages, and the artwork in between.

  • Designers and illustrators who work in publishing, not general graphic design.
  • Files supplied to press specification, with layered sources handed over at the end.
  • Capacity to take on a single title or a season's list without changing the process.

Design and illustration services for publishing

Six areas of work, each with dedicated service pages covering scope, process and file formats.

What working with us is like

A creative team, not a marketplace

The same designers and illustrators stay on your book from first sketch to final file, so the style holds together across every page.

Set up for international clients

Agreed overlap hours, one named contact and written summaries after every call, so a twelve-hour gap never costs you a day.

Designed for your book, not a template

Concepts come from the manuscript, the genre and the shelf it has to compete on — never from a stock cover with the title swapped in.

Checked before it reaches you

Bleed, trim, spine width, image resolution and colour space are verified against your printer's spec before any file is sent.

Feedback that goes somewhere

Revision rounds are agreed in the quote and tracked in one shared folder, with version history you can look back through.

Capacity that scales with the list

One title or forty, the studio adds illustrators to a project rather than pushing your schedule back into next quarter.

Five stages from brief to final artwork

01

Share your requirement

Send the manuscript, page count, trim size and any covers you like or want to avoid.

02

Discuss the concept

We come back with direction, scope, schedule and a fixed quote before work starts.

03

Design and development

Concepts are drawn up, then the direction you choose is built out in full.

04

Review and refinement

Your notes are worked through in the agreed rounds, with each version kept on file.

05

Final delivery

Press-ready files, ebook and social versions, and the layered source artwork.

Commissioned by the people who publish

Briefs arrive from single-title authors and from teams clearing a full season's list.

A creative production partner across time zones

Most of our work is commissioned from outside India. Projects run on a shared schedule with an agreed overlap window, so approvals keep moving whether your day starts in Sydney or Denver.

Contracts, invoicing and file handover are handled in English, and manuscripts stay under NDA from the first email.

What clients say about the process

The first round of concepts already understood the book better than the brief I wrote. Choosing one was the hard part.

Forty interior illustrations across three titles, all consistent, all delivered before the print date. Nothing came back needing a rescue.
Placeholder attributionProduction manager, educational publisher
We hand over rough scans and get back vector files our engineers can edit. It has taken a whole task off our team.

Before you send a brief

Anything not covered here, ask us directly and you will get a straight answer, not a proposal deck.

Talk to our team

Front, spine and back, typography and artwork, a print-ready PDF built to your printer's specification, and separate ebook and social versions. You see initial concepts before any one direction is developed in full.

Yes. Single-title projects for independent authors run alongside list work for publishers and packagers. The process is the same; the scale and the schedule differ.

Every quote states the rounds before work starts, usually two on concepts and one on final artwork. Extra rounds are quoted separately rather than absorbed silently into the schedule.

Send the previous titles, style sheet or brand guidelines and new artwork is built to sit beside them, whether that means matching an illustrator's line quality or holding to a series grid.

Each project has one named contact and an agreed daily overlap window. Files, feedback and version history stay in a shared folder, so progress never depends on catching someone live.

You do. Full rights to the commissioned artwork transfer on final payment, along with layered source files. Confidentiality and NDA terms are agreed before manuscripts are shared.

Let's bring your book to life

Send the manuscript, the page count and your deadline. You will have a scope, a schedule and a fixed quote back within one working day.
